The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, MAY 9, 1908. A VOLUNTEER CORPS FOR FOXTON.
Messrs W. E. Barnard and P. M. Page are making an effort to form a volunteer corps in Foxton. They are obtaining the names of all within the age limit, who feel disposed to become enrolled, and so far their efforts are meeting with encouraging results. At a later date it is proposed to hold a public meeting to be addressed by some well-known staff-officer, when the advantages of volunteering will no doubt be fully e ip'ained. Every citizen should take a course of training in a volunteer corps in order to enable him to handle a rifle with accuracy and precision. If we were called upon to defend our hearths and home against an enemy, at some period in the dim future, then much would depend upon the efficiency of our citizen army. God alone knows what the next quarter of a century may bring forth—a little spark may fire the magazine—and Great Britain and her dependencies may be at grips with one or a combination of foreign Powers. It, therefore, behoves every young man to say if the call is made ; “I am ready.” Apart from the question of a preparedness for defence, volunteering is a very pleasant and profitable hobby—it is educational in many ways, and decidedly beneficial from a physical point of view. We wish Messrs Barnard and Page success in their efforts.
