TRAMWAY FATALITY.
The Inquest. Wki.ungton, May 8. The adjourned inquest into the circumstances of the death of Mr Joseph Petrie, late Mayor of Greymouth, was concluded to-night. The evidence failed to prove what car the deceased was a passenger on when he met with the accident, which resulted fatally. A woman passenger said deceased had pulled the bell, indicating that he wished to alight. The car slowed down, but did not stop. It then went faster and Mr Petrie jumped out when the car was going five or six miles an hour. The deceased fell and the motorman then stopped the car, ran to where Mr Petrie lay and took the names of some of the passengers. The City solicitor said he had interrogated' all the tramwaymen employed on that section at about the time of the accident and none admitted knowledge of the affair. No accident had been reported. The jury found that deceased met his death accidentally by slipping from a moving car on the night of April 6th.
