The Englishmen arrive in New Zealand by the Atbenic, which is due in Wellington on May 18th. Their visit is bringing out a lot of old players, among whom are Jim Hunter (Taranaki), Bennett (Otago), and even Jimmy Duncan, who can’t resist the temptation of having another whack at the Britishers.
A meeting of the Foxtou Rugby Sub-Union was held in the Post Office Hotel last night, Mr \V. J. White presiding ; there were also present Messrs Dickson, Cook, and Bird (Albion) Hynes and Reid (Awahou), and E. Wanklyn (Secretary). The following Albion team has been chosen to play Sandonat Sandon on Saturday the gth May next. Momo, Frankland, Bird, Smith, Hukiki, Perawiti, Beaton, Meadows, Broughton, Cook, Puti, Hunt, Whibley, Hannah, Desmond. Emergencies :—Rimmer, Klien, Furrie, Maitland. The drag will leave Foxtou at 12 noon on Saturday, 9th. The Chairman explained the result of the visit made by himself and the Secretary to a meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Union in respect to the question of the Foxton Sub-Union’s application for affiliation with the former union. At present the Foxtou Rugby Sub-Union is under the wing of the Manawatu Union, and it is considered that it would be more in the interests of local rugby if some arrangement could be entered into with the Horowhenua Union’ whereby a senior and junior tournament could be arranged with teams from Shannon, Devin and those playing under the Foxtou Rugby Sub-Union regime. Mr White stated that those present at the Horowhenua Union meeting expressed themselves as in favour movement but action was deferred. Mr White further stated that nothingfurther had been heard from the Horowhenua Union on the subject and if some action was not taken at once the game would go under in this district at least for this season. Some action was necessary. After some discussion, Messrs White and Wanklyn were appointed to wait on the Secretary of the Shannon Club with a view of inducing the Shannonites to throw in their lot with this end players. It was further moved that a general meeting of footballers be held at an early date to arouse local enthusiasm in Rugby.
