Mining Fatality. Auckland, Saturday. Edward Quigg and Henry Shaney were working in a coal mine at Maramarau, when there was a heavy fall of coal. Both were conveyed to the Auckland Hospital. Shaney was found to be very badly injured in the head and back. Both legs were paralysed. Quigg, who was suffering from contusions of the back and a spiained ankle, died subsequently. One of the shots loo.ened the coal in the roof and it fell j at tially without warning. Qnh'g’s brother was wolf ing some distance off Shaney was trucking. Another man, Ferguson, in the vicinity, was killed, his hfdy being found later under the fallen coal. The roof where they we-e working on the big seam was 20 to 25 feet overhead. They were splitting pillars. Quigg heaul a splitting sound and called out “My God, we’re killed.” Quigg was stooping and Shaney standing. The coal caught him on the head and back. It buried Quigg past his waist and struck him 011 the head- One bh.ck laying across bis legs had to be split before it could be moved.
