The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 1908. FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD BILL.

There is little to report in reference to the proposed Harbour Board. The Chamber ol Commerce together with the member for the district and Messrs Moore and Barnard, solicitors, have all the details well in hand. It is now a question of waiting the convenience of Cabinet in order to ascertain the nature and extent of endowments which may be included in the Bill apd unless this information is forthcoming at an early date the formalities set out in the standing orders will not be able to be complied with and as a result there will be no chance of the Bill getting through Parliament during the coming session. This would be a great disappointment to every one who has been actively connected with the movement and also to thousands of people in other districts who hope to benefit through the improved conditions of the port properly controlled. It was wisely suggested by Mr Stevens M.P, and indorsed by members of the deputation yesterday, that rather than jeopardise the Bill constituting the Board it would be in the best interests to allow certain of the endowments jto stand out of the Bill and secure flieor afc a later date than have the measure shelved this session. Better half a ‘ loat than no bread, nay, we say better a quarter. Get the Harbour Board constituted this session, then make for its completion later jbu£ don’t let us drop this Bill because yye jean’t'get everything we want at the start, Mf {Sfevens has forwarded a lengthy message to the

Minister for Marine on the subject and a definite reply is expected in the course ol a few days, when it may he necessary for a deputation to proceed to Wellington to wait on Ministers in order to complete the Bill in detail.
