OBITUARY.
Bernard Spelman—Aged 48.
The sudden death of Mr Bernard Spelman, which took place at his residence, yesterday forenoon, came as a ,great surprise to townspeople, many of whom he had been conversing with but a day or two previous, then in his apparent usual health. It appears that be was seized with epilepsy, and never recovered consciousness. The late Mr Spelman was born in County Roscommon, Ireland, and arrived in Wellington by the s;s. Hudson, 1111878. He settled in the Foxton district shortly after his arrival in New Zealand; and J started business as a general carrier, contractor, wood and coal merchant. He also set up a grain crushing plant on his premises in the Avenue. He took a kee.i interest in municipal and educational affairs, and for a time served on the Borough Council and School Committee. The late Mr Spelman was a large-hearted and open-handed citizen, and his well-known figure and happy humour will be missed from our midst. He leaves a widow, four sons, and two daughters, also four brothers and a sister, in the Pohangina Valley, to mourn their* loss, to whom we extend, in com? mon with others, our deepest sympathy. The funeral will leave' his late residence at 1.30 p.m., tomorrow, for St. Mary's Church, after which the remains will be interred in the local cemetery.
