THE PROPHET RUA AND TIMI KARA.
The Hon. Jas. Carroix, Native Minister, is to be congratulated upon his diplomacy in winning the fanatic Maori prophet, Rua, to reason. A telegram from Auckland informs us that: “Asa result of negotiations with the rival parties of Maoris represented by the prophet Rua and Kereru, the Hon. Carroll has succeeded in promoting peace between the rival factions. The announcement was made by a Rua chief that his followers would fall in with the Government’s ideas of the Urewera Country. This was received with wild cheering by the other natives, during which Rna’s party chanted an old war-song signifying that the dispute was ended.” The settlement of the Maori difficulty in the Urewera country will enable a vast area of fertile country, parts of which are rich in minerals, to be thrown open for settlement.
