The United States Government has accepted the invitation of the Government of China for the fleet to visit China,
President Roosevelt’s Message to Congress recommended, besides the points cabled, a child labour law and legislation for the regulation of the use of‘injunctions in labour disputes. It . urged the institution of savings banks.
The late Duke of Devonshire will be buried at Edensor (Derbyshire) on Saturday. Mrs Robinson, charged with perjury in the Druce case, has been committed for trial.
Venice, March 26,
King Emmanuel met the Kaiser and the Kaiserin at Venice to-day. The populace accorded an enthu- * siastic reception.
The King took luncheon with the Kaiser and Kaiserin, and afterwards proceeded aboard the German Imperial yacht Hohenzollern, where the King was entertained in the evening to dinner. . The warships and the gondolas were effectively illuminated. ’ Sydney, March 26.
Advices by an Island steamer record a massacre of natives at the Admiralty Islands.
Four natives went from their own to, an adjacent island to purchase food supplies. While they were* bartering they were surrounded by Bush Natives, who hacked them to pieces with tomahawks.
The massacred men carried rifles, and it is believed that the murderers’ motive was to obtain the firearms. The German authorities are sending a punitive expedition. The second reading of the Industrial Disputes Bill was carried by 28 to 21. Neither the Government nor the Opposition anticipated such a sudden termination to the debate.
London, March 25. There was an outbreak of fire at Duty Lane Theatre to-day. It was confined to the stage, through the safety curtain, and much scenery was destroyed. Tne damage id estimated at ,£75,000. Brooks, a London and NorthWestern Railway detective, found in possession of thirty-one skeleton keys, a jemmy, and a file for altering keys, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for _ several robberies oh the line between Llandudno and Wolverhampton. The Court also ordered the Company to pay £6OO, the value of some jewels that were lost on that section. Brooks travelled in the same corridor train as the owner of the jewels. Five porters and a clerk have now been arrested for robberies at Euston railway station. Stolen goods worth have been re- - covered. .
