HIMATANGI.

Opening the New School.

The opening of the new school at Himatangi was celebrated amidst great rejoicing on Monday. Parents and children gathered iu great numbers from all parts of the district, and a most enjoyable time was spent. Mr F. Pirani (Chairman of the Board) and Mr A. Fraser, who had taken a great interest in the erection of the school, were unable to be present, and the representation of the Board devolved on Mr G. H. Bennett, who, in a congratulatory speech, formally opened the school, Mr Bennett referred to the enthusiastic way the members of the committee had worked, and enlarged on the responsibility that rested on them of making the school attractive to the children by improving the grounds, affording facilities for healthy recreation, and taking an intelligent interest in the work of the school. At the invitation of the chairman (Mr Conlau), Mr Bennett presented the prizes won during the last year, each pupil receiving a handsome book.

The head teacher, Mr Raikes, was also presented with a handsome silver mounted tobacco pouch by the pupils of the school as a mark of their appreciation of his work. The new school is built to accommodate 80 children and is well lighted, roomy, well ventilated, and thoroughly up-to-date in all the necessary conveniences. The site is an admirable one, being very central and situated ph a nice rise, commanding an extensive view of the surrounding country. After the new building had been inspected by those present, an adjournment was made to the beautiful grounds belonging to Mr Hammond, where a pleasant days picnicking was spent. Games of all kinds .were indulged in by the children, and a plentiful supply of good things was provided by the parents of the children. A dance in the old -schoolroom brought a most enjoyable day’s outing to a close. Mr Coulafn and his enthusiastic committee are to be heartily congratulated on such a well-managed function.
