HISTORIC MAORI RELICS LOST.
Auckland, February 25. During the recent bush fires, the old native meeting house at Maungakawa, in the Wikato, was destroyed. It contained a number of valuable carvings, including the “ Throne ” and the “ Crown ” of the late King Tawhiao. Both were beautifully carved, the latter being inlaid with greenstone. The Maoris had refused for the contents recently. The Hon. Jas. Carroll endeavoured to have them placed in the Museum, but the suspicious nature of the Maoris prevented them handing the treasures over to the pakeha for safe keeping. They are about to take proceedings against a settler who, it is alleged, started a fire to clear bush.
