There is an epidemic of typhoid fever in Auckland; 89 cases having been reported-in the city and suburbs since December 1. Dr Purdy estimates that typhoid fever costs Auckland £ls, 3°° a year for hospital cases alone, a sum which would capitaliss .£300,000. Probably tho total cost of enteric, he says, would equal the cost of Mr Midgley Taylor’s drainage scheme. Wellington', Wedneseay. The Hon W. Hall-Jones returned to Wellington from the South to-day. Some months ago a plasterer fell from a building in Dunedin, and was killed. The arbitration Court awarded £3BO as compensation, and directed that the money was to be devoted by the public trustee to the maintenance of deceased’s illegitimate child, aged six months, and its mother. A claim is now being ,lodged on behalf of the deceased’s wife, whom he deserted in Victoria some years, and a crippled child. In view of the peculiar and difficult circumstances of the case the trustee intends to bring the application before the Arbitration Court for decision.

The lot of the school teacher, according to the chairman of the City school committee (Mr P. M. Mackay), is not a happy one. Speaking at a meeting of the committee, he said that whenever a new subject of any kind affecting the young was brought into prominence the head teacher was looked to for light and leading. The head teacher, in his opinion, was a beast of burden, whose load was getting too heavy to bear. “Some of these days,” he said, “ the last straw will be put on him, and his back will break.” Dunedin, February 17. The mauager of the billiard room at St. Kilda was fined 40/and costs for permitting cards to be played on the premises. Three others who took part in the game were each fined 10/-.
