DRUNKEN FIRE FIEND.

Burns His Houss Down.

Perishes in the Flames.

Masterton, February 20,

A house was burned down last night at Mauriceville, and a man named Walter Mortensou .was burned to death. Details show deceased, his wife, and another man visited the Masterton Show yesterday, where deceased got very drunk, and had to be taken home again by the man. On arrival at home, the wife —who was afraid of deceased when he was in drink —went to bed with her five children, leaving the deceased up. He said, “Good-bye all. I’ll make it warm for you to-mor-row ! ” The wife took no notice of this remark, as he . had often threatened to burn the house down, but went to sleep. Eater, she heard the crackling of burning timber, and had only just time to get the children out of the house, the building being consumed within half-an-hour.

The decased’s body was found near one of the windows, burned almost to a cinder, the legs being burned. completely off. It is surmised that the fire was caused through the deceased letting a kerosene lamp fall.
