SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
Chairman Resigns.
A special meeting of the school committee was held at the State School yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock for the purpose of considering the Chairman’s resignation. Present : Messrs L. W. Wilson (chairman), P. Hennessy, M. Perreau, T. Betty, S. H. Bakeh The Chairman’s resignation stated that he could no longer retain the position of Chairman or member of the School committee with self respect in view of the action of the Education Board oh many occasions ignoring thf committee. The Board’s action ion many occasions in ignoring the committee compelled him to think that the committee was not what he understood it to be viz., ari advisory body to the Central Boa d, but rather with limited powei s confined to finance at times under extreme difficulties, for the improvement of the school grounds, school cleaning ana other minor matters, and apparently having no voice in educat: onal matters whatever. Another reason for resigning was pressure , of business. He wished the committee to understand he had no felling against the headmaster nor any member of the committee, a i during his term as Chairman lie had been able to work amicably with all. The Chairman’s resignation caused a good deal ')f discussion as to the relative co mectiou between Committe and ; ioard. Mr Wilson was fin illy induced to remain on the Con mittee until the end of the term at d Mr Baker was elected to the Chairmanship.
