GIRL’S SAD DEATH.
Mastertok, February 16,
The body of a young woman, whose name was ascertained to be Ettie’ Phelhert, was found in the Whipoua River early yesterday morning. A lad was looking for cows, when he noticed the body in about three feet of water. Life was extinct.
Medical examination revealed the fact that deceased had given birth to a child. The latter has hot been discovered.'
! Deceased belonged to Hokitika, bad been in MasteVton six weeks, qnd had been employed as a laundress at various hotels. Her father recently died at Hokitika, and deceased had been despondent since then. deceased had been questioned as to her condition, but had indignantly rebelled the accusation, which she characterised as a cruel shame. ' Later. At the inquest on Ettie Phelbert, the jury returned a verdict that she committed suicide while temporarily insane, and added a rider complimenting the girl’s friends on their efforts towards the help of the unfortunate young woman.
