Dunedin, February 16. At the inquest on the boy Wilson, who had both legs taken off by a moving carriage being shunted at the railway station on the 7th inst, the jury returned a verdict that death was caused accidentally, and no blame was attached to any one. Auckland, February 16.
The eleven-year-old son of Mr Ellisdon, of Kingsland. was knocked over by a drag and was killed when alighting from a tram car at the Kingsland terminus last evening. The occurrence took jillce In the presence of the lad’s father and mother.
Mr' W. J. Wyllie, sen., telephone exchange officer, died suddenly at Motahihi, where he had been spending a holiday, at one o’clock to-day. s Bluee, February 16.
A sad drowning accident occurred here yesterday afternoon. A young half-caste, James Spencer, aged 22’ years, lost his life in rescuing a lad named Buchanan, aged 12 years. It appears that Buchanar was bathing and was carried away by the current. Spencer, noticing this rushed in, fully dressed, and grabbed the boy, whose struggles greatly hampered him. A.fireman, Daniel Johnston, of the. s.s. Otari, dived off the wharf to hi&jLSsistance. Johnston seized the boy, but Spencer had disappeared. Fred Towner, who also went to their assistance, narrowly escaped drowning, being exhausted when he was picked tip by a boat. Spencer’s body was recovered shortly afterwards. Artificial means to restore respiration were tried without avail. The accident has cast a gloom over the port, where Spencer was very well known, and great sympathy is expressed for his parents.
