AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE.

Sydney, February 13

Mr G. H: Reid, criticising the defence proposals of Mr Ueakin, Federal Premier, said the idea of compulsory service was repugnant. It appeared to be largely confined to young men between 18 and 21 years of age, which was an outrage. The pauper line had been introduced by providing that those young fellows, who, by reasons of having persons depending on them, could not afford to go into training for nothing, should be paid. As to naval defence, Mr Reid said: the proposed scheme would not do at all. What was wanted’ was to put life into the present defence system, and provide as head of the forces a man who had practical experience of war.
