NOTES AND COMMENTS.
“ We (Feilding Star) congratulate the Foxton folk on their determination to obtain power to control the management of their own harbour by the establishment of a Harbour Board, and if the functions of the Board are defined to the satisfaction of the districts included in the area for the election of members, there can be no possible objection to the scheme. It is not stated, however, whether there is an/ intention to ask for powers of taxation ; and should that be the case, there will be a strong opposition to such a course. The proper method would be to endeavour to obtain an endowment for the Board from the Government, and as the Port of Foxton is of considerable importance to a very large district, we should think that a good case could easily be made out in favour of such a proposal. Whatever is done must surely be an improvement on the existing state of affairs, and tend to the welfare of those who reside in the district within reach of the port.” We may inform the Star that no rating area is proposed, as sufficient revenue will be derived for all purposes without recourse to rating. As an act of courtesy, representation is given to Feilding and Palmerston on the proposed Board, but the Board could be conducted successfully without outside representation. However, we are pleased to note the absence of grasping for control spirit in the above so marked in our Palmerston evening contemporary’s article on the subject.
