The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1908. PROPOSED HARBOUR BOARD.

Our Palmerston evening contemporary published an amusing article in its issue of the 6th inst., in reference to the formation —or resurrection—of the Foxton Harbour Board. It would lead its readers to infer from the aforesaid article that this important project took its rise in Palmerston, whereas Palmerston has had as much to do with the formation of the proposed Harbour Board as the man in Timbuctoo. It informs its readers that the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce has taken an active part in the project , but the delay that has occurred was mainly due to the apathy of the Foxton paople. The italics are ours, in order to emphasize the imaginative powers of the individual who penned the article. Will our evening contemporary inform us when the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce took an active part in the project ? Palmerston representation on the proposed Board does not please our evening contemporary, which says to allot Foxton three members and Pa’merston one is unfair representation,” and then it makes this remarkable statement: “ The success of the Harbour Board practically depends upon the support received from the Palmerston district, and in these circumstances it is entitled to greater representation ; it should at least have two members.” The above paragraph is so much tommy rot. If Palmerston’s support were excised altogether it would make little or no difference to the success of the Board from a financial point of view. If a rating area were necessary to finance the Board

then, perhaps, there would he something in what our contemporary says. But it is apparent that the writer of the article knows little or nothing <h the project, and before he attempts to mislead his readers again it would be as well lot him to peruse the facts and figures submitted at the public meeting held at Fox ton on the 6th inst. Further, any surplus brains that Palmerston has, will he required for some years to come in controlling its own civic affairs.
