ANTI-ASIATIC LEAGUE.

A meeting of the recently-formed local branch of the Anti-Asiatic League was held in Manchester House last night. Mr R. Newth, Vice - President, occupied the chair, and there were upwards of 40 present. The object of the meeting was to form a Committee of Management, and the following were elected: Messrs Hussey, Rouse, R. Johnston, Haydon, W. Bradcock, Jacks, Wind, and Snertinge. Mr S. H- Baker was present, and entered into a lively debate with the members, advocating the stalling of a school at the expense of the Dominion, in order to educate the aliens. His views did not meet with the approval of those present. Rules were drawn up and ordered to be printed and circulated among the members. It was decided to hold meetings during the first week in each month. After other matters of minor importance were discussed, the meeting rose. The League has now a membership of about 50, It was distinctly pointed out by the officials that the League did not exist to unlawfully harass any Chinese residents or tradesmen, but to assist the authorities in seeing that the laws were duly observed.
