The Mediterranean fruit fly has made its appearance in this province, having been discovered in jfx. orchard at Devonport. It ,£eems so far to be confined to one small area, and every effort is being made by the Government Pomologist, who is on the spot, to prevent its spread. Wellington, January 31.
Mr Riddel], S.M., gave judgment to-day in the case brought against, Whittaker, a bookseller,, for having sold, what was alleged to have been an indecent picture, entitled “ Sleep,” published in the Lone. Hand: magazine. The magistrate held that the picture was not indecent, and dismissed the information.

A fatal accident occurred at Gbnville last evening, on the Castlecliff branch line of railway, .when a man named Andrew Bogle was run over by a train and cut to pieces. The train was approaching Gonville station when the'engine-driver noticed an object on the line a few yards in front ■of the engine. He immediately applied the brakes, but the train* passed over before it was brought to a standstill. The arm and leg were severed, and the body horribly mangled. The victim was ' wlthih a ’ few. yards , of' his home, and evidently did not hear or see the approaching train.
