BANK INSPECTOR'S DEATH
Christchurch, January 25. While the Union Company’s steamer Monowai was on her way from Wellington to Lyttelton, Mr Hector Kenneth Bethune, inspector of the Bank of Australasia, dropped overboard, and was drowned. Mr Bethune, who was under the care of Mr Dudley, lelt the cabin without the knowledge of his friend, and went to the “ Boots ” and got a drink of water, and went on deck. The ‘ ‘ Boots ’ ’ had occasion to go out on deck shortly afterwards, and to his consternation and surprise saw Mr Bethune over the vessel’s rail and hanging on to the bulwarks. The Steward made a rush to get hold of him, but Mr Bethune, throwing up his arms, disappeared into the sea. The “ Boots ” immediately rushed-to the bridge, and.informed the officer on duty. The captain and other officers were called, but 'although a search was made and a sharp look-out kept, no trace of the missing man could be seen. The morning was very dark; and thei'e was. a thick smoke haze over the'water. Mr Bethune recently l madd a-'trip to Australia for his health. 1 • , ' ‘
