TWO-UP IN FOXTON.
Police make arrests. There was some mild excitement in Main bt- early last evening when a small low browed corlerie of the racecourse flotsam commenced a game of “ two-up,” under the able and interesting administration of Mr ‘Snuffy* Doyle. Mr Doyle is said to have been a remarkable exponent of the illegal game. In almost every part of the Dominion, he has put up records in the way of heading ’em, and last night showed that his hand has not yet lost its cunning. Under the influence of his gentle and persuasive oratory, several persons, more or less eminent, were quickly participating in the game over which Mr Doyle reigned supreme. The veteran "headed ” them four times and as the crowd then grew larger and evinced an ardent disposition to deposit its hard-earned gilt on the road, an adj ournment was made to a loose-box at the rear of Whyte’s Hotel, where kip and coppers had a merry time. The bubble burst with the appearance of Detective Quirke and Senior Constable Woods and the acrobatic feats of the sports as they fled was a sight for the gods. Two unfortunates were captured. One of these individuals is a reputable two-up champion from Christchurch with a savings-bank book showing deposits amounting to ,£IOO, and whose bands show no trace of hard work for a long period. Later the police came back and arrested /Mr Doyle, but he was liberated “ on his own recognizances ” A search for the kip and coppers by the police was unsuccessful, the instruments having been quickly hidden by some of the players.
