About Town.
The races have attracted a hetrogenious mass of humanity to the town, including beer bludgeons, “take downs,” “ bas been ” pugilists, “ Knights of the Broad Arrow,” and other human parasites, who prowl around and extort, legally and otherwise, a livlihood from the credulous and simple. Many have already fallen victims to these slim visitors, and as a resule are poorer and wiser for the acquaintance. This is one of the dark spots connected with the “Sport of Kings,” which will continue to go hand in hand with racing, despite the vigilance of the police. The present meeting has also been the means of attracting a large number of very desirable visitors to the town who have been favourably impressed with the port and the progress made and who prophesy a bright future for Foxton. A very considerable amount of money has been spent locally during the past three days by patrons of local shows which include buck jumping exhibitions, alligator cuddlers, snake charmers, fire eaters, merry-go-round, etc.
