FOXTON RACING CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING.
Despite the rather threatening appearance of the weather on Tuesday, the sun shone out. hot and strong yesterday, the opening day of the Foxton Racing Club’s annual meeting, and there was, in consequence, a very large attendance including a big contingent from Palmerston, Feilding and surrounding districts and the excursion trains were particularly |Wll patronised. The racing right through was extremely interesting, satisfactory fields facing the starter in each event, while there were one or two very close finishes. Speculation was brisk, a total of passing through the machine, as compared with on the first day last year, while the twelve bookmakers licensed by the Club also appeared to do good business. A wellknown Palmerston medico, Dr O’Brien, was in the judge’s box, and got through his work in excellent style. The management, as usual, was quite up to date, Mr Keith and his staff doing their work in a methodical manner that could not fail to be effective. Appended jare general details of the racing:— A field of seven faced the starter in the Hack Hurdles, the first race of the day. Pantaloon and Mount Cook cut out the running for a mile, each jumping well, while Maidi and Tauxa were close up, Xavier next and the Deader last. Rounding the home turn Mount Cook and the locally trained Mussin were in front, but at the distance Xavier came with a fast run, and cutting them down won comfortably by a length. The St. Clement’s gelding Kareroa bolted with the Electric Hack Handicap, jumping out of the tapes with Golden Eagle and never leaving the issue in doubt. Golden Eagle gave place to Roselethe on the post, Greenleaf was favourite on the machine, Golden Eagle and Kareroa being the next selection. With the exception of Sherlock Holmes all the acceptors in the Cup faced the starter. They were despatched on even terms and passing the stand Waipaku was in front of Doiret with Aberration and Signor a length in the rear, and Rosegrove last. Rounding the top turn Waipaku commenced to repeat her Ashhurst Cup performance, drawing away fully six lengths from her field, the order of which had not altered. At the far turn the mare looked all over a winner, but rounding the home bend Signor left the otheis and chased the mare. Cameron riding in his best style gradually wore down the Foxton mare and eventually won somewhat comfortably by half a length on the post. Doiret was a poor third, and after her came Bourrasque, ,Tan San and Rosegrove. A field of eleven went to the post in the Trial Hack Race, Waitiro, Reveille and Muskerado being the only withdrawals. Wisteria jumped away with the lead, but gave way to the placed horses after three furlongs had been traversed. At; the distance the three were on terms, but Seaton Dale lasted long enough to win by a neck from Reuben, First Mate a neck away third. The Palmerston trained ' Flingot, half brother to Bourrasque annexed the Awahou Welter very easily by a length from Scenery who closed up after the leoder had been steadied. St. Dudlam was prominent in the early stages, but dropped back beaten half a mile from home. Mikotahi was lying second at the home turn, but gave place to Scenery at the distance. The local trainer, S. Messiner, supplied the winner and runner-up in the Flying Handicap, Waicola scoring nicely from Motoa on the post after lying in the rear the greater part of the journey. Another locally trained and owned horse, Toa Tuhi, filled third place. The St. Clements mare Tarina scored a lucky- win in the Dash Handicap, getting home by a neck from the fast finishing Penates who got badly away and was making up his ground at a rapid rate when the post was reached. The Dunce was a length away third. The scratching pen was used freely in the last event. Dady Disdain, Fishermaid, Hatley, Maid of Astolat and Joe Chamberlain declining their engagement. The Herrington Welter Handicap produced the last race of the day. Carissima led for the ' greater part of the way, but at the distance the placed horses had drawn up on terms with her. In the run at the post Probability scored by a neck and the judge was unable to separate the other two.
