SHANNON-MOUTOA BRIDGE.
Slow Progress Crllloltod. At Wednesday’s County Council meeting considerable discussion took place in regard to the slow progress being made by the contractor with the erection of the Shannon bridge.—The overseer said that there were only four men working on it.—lt was suggested that no progress payment should be made by the Council unless greater expedition was used. —In reply to a question, the overseer said that the piles were being driven at the rate of about a foot a stroke, so that it would not appear that the bottom was very solid.—Cr Dalton said that he was always under the impression that before a bridge of the sort was built the Government engineer made sure that there was a good foundation, but it did not appear to be so in this case.—lt was decided to pass the progress payment, but to draw the Horowhenua Council’s attention to the dilatory manner in which the work was being carried out.
