At Brisbane last month Archbishop Dunne was presented, on behalf of the Roman Catholic laity of Brisbane, with a victoria in commemoration of his silver jubilee. The presentation was made by the Hon. A. J. Thynne, M.F.C., who said the Archbishop was looked upon by all Queensland as the one man who had led the way in all matters connected with the best interests of the state. Archbishop Dunne said the gift would always remind him of the many kindnesses of his people, for whom he had always tried to do the best he could. He had been forty-four years amongst the people of Queensland, having arrived in the state on Separation Day, 1861. During the whole of that time he had not had a quarrel with anyone; but he had received great kindness from all denominations. Indeed, he owed the preservation of his life, humanely speaking, to a Protestant gentleman who, when he was about to cross a swollen stream, dissuaded him from doing so and assisted in bringing him and his horse to a place of safety. He hoped to meet people of all denominations in that other world towards which they were all hastening. , 1f
