UNDER A MATTRESS.

Auckland, January 8. At Remuera yesterday a visit was paid by Detectives Miller, Cox, and Scott to a house for the purpose of executing a warrant for the arrest of J. Pearce, baker, lately carrying on business as auctioneer at Newmarket, on three charges of obtaining money by means of valueless cheques. The landlady, on being applied to, denied that the man wanted was in her house. She refused admittance to the detectives. The latter, however, insisted on entering, and on search being made the baker was found secreted under a mattress in a bedroom. He was duly arrested.
