DROWNING FATALITY.
Blenheim, Dec. 29. Yesterday afternoon, while a party of ladies and children were bathing in the Opawa river, Zita Shaw-, aged twelve years, daughter of Mr F. Shaw, chemist, was carried off her feet by the current. Mrs Arthur Farmar (aged 37) and her daughter Rona (aged 17) went to her assistance, but were also carried away. Zita Shaw’s mother, a good swimmer, went to their rescue, and almost succeeded in getting her daughter to the bank, but lost her. then tried to rescue [ Farmer, who bad jaint*5 J; tut without succors, the Faifnars; mother and dauguter, f and Zita Shaw, all being dmv. tieu, . Mrs Shaw was diving to mid. the bodies when assists iK'e'ifr’wedj The bodies were soon recovcJ e d| and efforts at resuscitation w&j|; continued for a considerable timef., but unsuccessfully. At an inquest to-day a verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned. The jury specially commended Mrs Shaw’s bravery and the prompt action of a number of men and police who recovered the bodies and rendered aid. The jury also expressed the view that the Borough Council should provide a proper swimming place.
