RIVER SOCIAL.

!A moonlight river social, organised by the local Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild, took place last night, and was voted one of the most enjoyable social functions of the year. A steam launch and puflt were chartered from Messrs Levin and Co., to make a trip to the Heads and back. The services of the band were obtained, and about 150 persons embarked shortly after 7 o’clock. The night was perfect for the outing, ■and as the boat,left her moorings, Band, under Bandmaster struck up a lively air, fplwWiiich made those ashore envy merry-makers. After a pleasIwpaint trip, a landing was effected l||P;'ht the South Spit, and young and old scrambled up the hills, - which created much merriment. The excursionists were informed & that they would be allowed an . - hour ashore, after which supper f 5 - would be served, and the return trip made. Many wandered along the beautiful beach, others inf- ‘dulged in wading, and some went for a dip in the briney. After an -1 : 1 excellent and much appreciated W supper, the boats cast off for the t /#'? return trip. Selections by the Eland and choruses made the time Jy. Before landing, cheers were riven,for the ladies, Rev. Aitken, dripper and engineer, and the Band. Owing to a little delay in •etilrning, the arrival of the party yas later than anticipated. Another moonlight excursion is seing arranged lor January. ■ On Boxing Day a picnic will be reld. The boats will leave the yharf at 10 a.m., for the Heads. Unch will be provided at Mr M. Perreau’s tea rooms. The charge or the outing, including lunch, yill be 2S‘ 6d per adult, and a reluction for children.
