Accused Before the Court.

A Remand Granted.

, William Waugh was brought before Messrs W. Beck and S. Abrahams at the Police Court this morning - and charged with having wounded Constable Connor with intent to do grevious bodily harm. Mr Tones appeared for accused. The police applied for a remand until Monday next, which was granted. Mr Innes applied for bail. This was opposed by Sergt. Stagpoole, who stated that had the man been a poor man instead of being well-to-do, no bail would be allowed. To grant the request would mean class law. The constable’s life hung in the balance, and it was not yet known whether he would live. In such a case bail ought not to be allowed. Bail was fixed in self one surety of or two sureties of each.
