TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

At the school committee meeting on Thursday night, Mr Baker brought up the question of the establishment of a technical school at Foxton. He hoped that an effort would be made to start the school before next winter, with continuation classes, carpentering, and engineering classes, and also cookery and advanced needlework classes for girls. Once the school was established, there were plenty of young fellows who instead ol spending their time in the street, would gladly avail themselves of the opportunity to improve their technical education. He would also like to see the local school have the benefit of periodical visits from the Board’s dairy instructor, and he suggested that the Board be written to with this end in view. He would be prepared to lend milk-testing appliances if a dairy class were formed, conditionally, that the Committee would make good any damage done to same.

Mr Levett said that about £SO would be required to start the technical school, and that the Government would give a subsid} 7 of £ for £ towards equipment. The question was, how to raise the money ? He suggested a concert in order to raise funds so that a start could be made as soou as possible. Mr Hennessy objected to canvassing for subscriptions because the same people were called upon too often. He thought the Committee could approach the Council for a grant of, say £ 2O, for technical education. On the motion of Messrs Hennessy and Baker, the Secretary was instructed to make application to the Borough Council for a grant of £2O towards equipping the technical school. The Chairman said the Chamber of Commerce had donated £5 towards the object. It was also decided to approach the Board with a view of forming a dair3 r class. It was decided to open the technical school in March next.
