The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1907. SACRED (?) CONCERT.

The Elton Comedy Company held a so-called sacred concert in the Public Hall on Sunday last. We say “ so-called'’ sacred advisedly. We fail to find anything “sacred” in the caricature song, “The only apple op the tree,” and such other items as “ A bunch of Shamrock,” “Why did they sell Killarney,” etc. Farther, was permission given to this company by the local authority to hold the concert as provided by the Municipal Corporations Act? Was the programme submitted to the Council ? If not, why not? We believe the police usually make the necessary investigations. What was done in this case we cannot say. However, if the Elton Comedy Company or any other company _ for that matter, cannot earn sufficient money during six nights of the week, without prostituting the Sabbath, then they should try some other means of earning a livelihood. Yet, John Chinaman, who does not conform to Christianity, is fined for working in his garden on the Sabbath !
