OBITUARY.
Jas. Saunders, Aged 81. Another old settler and pioneer passed peacefully away at his homestead, Moutoa, on Tuesday morning last in the person of Mr Jas. Saunders, at the ripe age of 81 years. Mr Saunders was born in Herefordshire, England, in 1826. As a young man he was in .the employ of the Idte Dr Camming, of London, a great divine. Leaving the Old Land he visited the East and West Indies, but finally made up his mind to try his luck in New Zealand, arriving at Wellington in the ship Mariner in 1856. He spent a short time in the Canterbury district, subsequently removing to the Hutt, where he enlisted as a militiaman under Captain Clealgnd, during .the troublesome times. It was here he married a daughter of the late David McHardie, well-known in Rangitikei. After residing at Featherston, Wairarapa, for a time he settled down at Moutoa 31 years ago where he remained up to the lime of his death. He was a man of retiring disposition, and was held in the highest esteem by all with whom he became acquainted. The old gentleman had been in very indifferent health for some time, being confined to his bed for the last six months. He is survived by his wife and four daughters (Mrs Kirby, Paignton, Eneland ; Mrs Nicholls, Punipawa, South Island ; Mrs D. McKenzie, Petone ; and Miss Saunders, Moutoa) ; and three sons (Mr John F. Saunders, Ngaire ; Mr Norman G. Saunders, West Wanganui, South Island ; and Mr A. Saunders, Moutoa) who mourn their loss. The remains were followed to their last resting place in the Foxton Cemetery this afternoon, by a large concourse of mourners. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Mr Southern.
