The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1907. TAKE DOWNS.
The animal Show always attracts a mini her of individuals, jugglers, comic singers, high-kickers, blackguards etc., who exploit a gullible public of ready cash. When the Show is over, these artists join Ibices and travel country towns as variety entertainers. Hall-keepers, publicans, and newspaper proprietors, unless they demand prepayment, fall victras to these charlatans. It would be a wise step on the part of the Government to pass a bill compelling all travelling companies to pay a license fee to every local governing body where they intend to appear. This would, we think, have the effect of compelling a large number of “take downs” to earn an honest living, and would encourage the better class of companies touring the dominion to visit more inland towns than they do at present. We warn local play-goers to be on the look out.
