THE LICENSING SCANDAL.

Further Details. Christchurch, September 18. The enquiry by the Christchurch Licensing Committee into the allegations concerning the control and conduct of the Crite- • rion Hotel was concluded to-day. The matter first came before' the committe on September sth am ? was then adjourned until, the 13th, when a quantity of contradictory . evidence was given. An adjourn- I ment was then granted for the n purpose of enabling Mrs Green, wife of the licensee, to attend and give evidence, she being too ill to appear last week. Mrs Green, in her evidence to-day, denied that the house was conducted in an improper manner. Counsel for Manning and Co., holders of a mortgage for over the property, urged that they, as innocent parties, should not be penalised in the event of an adverse finding; and that an opportunity should be given the licensee to sell out, so that the mortgagees might be protected. The committee retired to consider their finding, and on returning, the Chairman made the following statement. “The committee are unanimously of opinion that the house has been improperly conducted and that neither Mr nor Mrs Green are fit and proper persons to have the conduct of a licensed house.” As the outcome of that decision they are not prepared at this moment to say what their action will be, but will adjourn these sittings for seven days to enable the bench to consider the position of the innocent parties.

There is nothing that will so effectually refresh and brace up the system, clear the brain, cleanse the complexion and brighten the eyes as a dose of Chamberlain’s Tablets. Their effect is to stimulate the bowels to perform their work in a natural and gentle manner, thus cleansing the system of all those poisonous matters that cause biliousness and sick headache.
