RATING ON THE UNIMPROVED VALUE.
It is more than provable that Mr A. W. Hogg, member for Masterton. accompanied by our own member, will deliver an address on the equity of Rating cn the Unimproved Value in Foxton, some time next month. Mr Hogg is recognised by Parliamentarians and the public press of the Dominion, as being one of our ablest exponents of this equitable system of rating. A definite reply has not yet been received from him, but Mr Stevens, who has been communicated with on the subject, informs one of those interested in this reform, that he has talked the matter over with Mr Hogg, and has suggested that the address take place between the gth and 15th October. Mr Stevens, in response to an invitation, said he would be pleased to be present and introduce Mr Hogg to the audience. Mr Stevens stated further, that he quite concurred in the opinion of those who desire to have rating on the unimproved value in the Borough of Foxton, instead of as at present penalising thrift and industry by taxation. He added ‘ ‘ the step proposed to be taken is merely adopting the principle which has been in existence since the passing of the Rand Act, and if it be satisfactory for general Government purposes, there can be no argument against its adoption by boroughs,” As soon as the date on which the address is to be delivered is settled, we shall notify same, and hope every ratepayer will make a point of attending.
