The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1907 THE BEACH ROAD.
Thk road to the beach is still in a deplorable state. It is used by hundreds of people locally and from alb parts of the district who are attracted to the seaside. If we attempted to describe the road, the County Council might accuse us, of ‘ ‘ drawing the long bow. ’ ’ That it is a disgrace to any governing,, body, no one will deny. The road is a delusion and a snare. The County Council controls the road but from what we can gather has not the funds at present to carry put the necessary improvement, unless property owners are prepared to raise a loan for the purpose, which is unreasonable to expect because it would not benefit them. The Government —Marine and Lands Department—are more closely interested in the matter than any other body, their tenants occupy the Sanitorium and foreshore. The Borough Council might be reasonably asked to contribute something towards the forming and metalling of the road. The member for the district has signified his intention of endeavouring to have a grant put on the Estimates for this very necessary work. If he is successful it will then have to be decided whether the grant will be spent on the present County track or on the imaginary road shown on the map by the Lands Department. However, we hope those responsible will get a move on and improve the present scandalous state of affairs.
