Ordinary Meeting. By Telegraph —Special to Herald. Wanganui, This Day. The ordinary meeting of the above was held last night. Present ■—Messrs Pirani (chairman), Ben--s/nett, Cargill, Dixon, Fraser, Guth- | rie, Smith and Spurdle. Leave of ’ absence was granted to Mr Purnell. The Bank account show 7 ed the Board was overdrawn to the extent of 16s qd. Appointments w 7 ere made as follows:—F. A. Bates, Hawera; Miss Gudgeon, Oroua Bridge ; Miss Howie. Parawanui ; Miss Young, St. Johns ; Miss Thompson, Halcombe; E. A. Ewart, Westmere. Resignations; J. M’Cloud, Hawera ; M. Harris, St. Johns. Sick leave was granted to E. T. Cassey, H. J. Pitts, J. Kendall, M. C. Harris, O. K. Coomber, G. Robertson, L. Clinton, M. Hellish, H. L. Spratt and E. A. Howie. General leave to E. Mossman. S. Stagpoole, C. A. Sprack, W. G. Armstrong and J. Aitken. The Board resolved that schools in the Wanganui Educational District should not be closed on Dominion Day. Accounts amounting to los qd were passed for payment. The question of establishing a High School at Rongotea was held over till next meeting. Resolved to apply to the Government for the re-establishment of a High School at Bulls. The Board granted £ for £ up to £l6 for improvements to the school at Oroua Bridge. In reply to a deputation re Bible reading in schools, the Chairman ■ said the Board had no power. The legal time in" the Wanganui District was five hours daily, and, provided that was not encroached upon, local committees could make their own arrangements if a majority 7 of the parents so decided, but it must be clearly understood that there could be no compulsion by a minority, and that any attempt at religious instruction must be, either before or after school hfburs.
