ATLANTIC GREYHOUNDS.
London, September ix. In connection with the race across the Atlantic Ocean from Great Britain to New York, between the Cunard Company’s new turbine steamer Lusitania, and the same company’s Lucania, fitted with reciprocating engines, the report of the first day’s run on the former vessel is quite equal to expectations. In the 24 hours the Lusitania steamed 556 nautical miles, or 23 i-6 knots an hour, although her progress was retarded by a fog for five hours.
Nkw York, September 12 The Lucania was yesterday afternoon HB9 miles east of Sandy Hook, and apparently ten hours behind the Lusitania. [The distance from Liverpool to New York is 3028 miles. A cable message, dated London, September Bth, stated the Lusitania had sailed for New York two and a half hours after the Lucania. It is not clear whether the Lucania was travelling east or west, but presumably she was leaving New York. The Lusitania is 790 ft long, 88ft in breadth, Soft in depth to boat deck, and draws 37ft 6in. Her displacement on load draught is 45,000 tons. The horse-power developed by her turbine engines is 68,000, and the contract speed is 25 knots an hour. Up to the present the fastest steamers in the Atlantic passenger trade have — Deutchland (German), 16,502 tons, 23)^knots; Kaiser Wilhelm 11. (German), 19,3 61 tons, 23X knots ; Kronprinz Wilhelm (German), 14,908 tons, 2 3 knots ; Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse (German), 14-349 tons, 22$knots; Lucania (British), 12,952 tons, 22 knots; Campania (British), a 2950 tons, 22 knots. Daily reports of the Lusitania’s voyage are received -by wireless telegraphy.]
