FOOTBALL.
We are pleased to learn, says the Palmerston Times', that as a result of the benefit football - matches on the Palmerston Showgrounds, on Saturday, a sum of about £2O will be derivable for the deserving objejct for which they were promoted. Yjjoung McEwan, the beneficiare, has had a particularly trying time of it, but is now slowly but surely on the road to recovery. We understand that further efforts will be made to supplement the amounts already raised for the sufferer, and a football match has been arranged between Palmerston North Fire Brigade and Fire Police on Saturday next. Auckland defeated Canterbury at Christchurch on Saturday, by three points (a try) to nil. An Auckland wing forward was ordered off the field for gingAt Masterton on Saturday Wel-
lington and Wairarapa played a drawn game. Wellington scored a try, and McKenzie for Wairarapa kicked a goal from half-way. In the McEwan benefit match at Palmerston, Palmerston defeated Wanderers by 17 points to nil. Kta Ora (Palmerston) v. \ Albions (Foxton). A fairly good display of football was witnessed at the local racecourse on Saturday last, when • Albions (supported by Shadbolt, Osboldstone, and Paddy McMinn) Seated Palmerston’s Abraham £kup winners, Kia Ora. The game was mostly of a forward character, and with Paddy McMinn to lead them on, the locals more than held their own with the visitors, with the result that they proved the victors by 11 points to eight. For the winners, Shadbolt, Osboldstone, Paddy Beaton, Cook, Robinson (2) and Richards put in good work, while Archie McMinn, Stalker, Webb Bros., Gavan and others, were most noticeable for Kia Ora, The game was played in the utmost good spirit, Mr F. Woods making an impartial referee. Messrs T. Curtis and D/Uixon provided tea for the visitors, whilst Charles Jonson is deserving of thanks for conveying the team to Shannon free of charge. The Kia Ora Club also granted £1 towards the McEwan benefit fund. This fund promises to be well patronised, and those who would like to contribute to such a worthy object will be pleased to know that lists are open with Messrs A. Shadbolt, W. White, G. Gray, whilst a canvass of the town will be made shortly by the Union Secretary. The football matches played in Palmerston N. recently are expected to aid the fund to the extent of over Dr Mandl has kindly consented to render all services free in connection with injured players throughout the season. Trophies in connection with the coming sports have been donated by Dr Mandl, Messrs Alf. Shadbolt, J. Jillett, J. Gillespie, and D. Heagerty. Foxton Sub - Union meet at Whyte’s Hotel next Friday evening, to consider correspondence received in connection with banner ; also to sanction recent disqualifications. (
