PHYSICAL CULTURE.
Competition Awards. In the Masonic Hall last night the members of Mr Jarrett's lady physical culture class and their lady friends, assembled in large numbers to participate in and witness the competition for the gold medals presented by the instructor for he most efficient pupils in the senior and junior divisions, during the term which has now closed. Dr O’Brien (of Palmerston) was selected as sole judge, and, owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr Hornblow at the commencement, Mrs Stewart was asked to occupy the chair. Eleven competed in the senior division, and six in the juuior. A number of pupils belonging to the class did not enter for competition. The same exercises were taken by seniors and juniors, and included dumb-bells, floor exercises, developers and breathing. The onlookers and judge expressed surprise and appreciation at the result for a single term of instruction, the judge remarking that the display by the pupils was the best he had witnessed or adjudicated upon. He awarded Miss McMillan the two gold medals in the senior division for the best developed pupil and for the most proficient in the exercises. This pupil was closely followed hy Miss Carter, who was awarded second honours, and Miss Ross third. For proficiency in exercises very few points separated the three above named, and nervousness accounted for a falling off in several of the others. The judge did not read out the individual points awarded in the various exercises. In the junior division Elsie Reeve was awarded first honours, Hilda Bullard second, and Vida Walker third. All the junior pupils did remarkably well. Last night's exhibition reflected credit alike on the instructor and pupils. Miss Carter receives a gold medal special prize as runner-up in the senior division. During the several short intervals between the various exercises, Mr Jarrett entertained those present with some splendid exhibitions of physical culture, the main feature of which was a beautiful display with fireclubs. Short speeches of a complimentary nature were made by the judge, instructor, and Mrs Stewart.
