RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
Grrymouth, August 19. An accident happened yesterday morning to a passenger train from Olira to Grey, whereby an engine and three cars were derailed. The train had only covered three miles of the journey when the driver noticed a huge rock coming teardown a hill. He whistled for brakes which were promptly applied, but the line was covered with snow. The rock struck the cowcatcher of the engine and, rebounding, struck the first car. The engine and three cars were derailed. In the front car were two passengers, who were thrown off their seats, but not injured, The engine-driver and fireman stuck to their posts. The engine and cars were severely damaged, the axle boxes being broken and the cowcatcher carried away, A gang of men left town, and had the line cleared by noon. The passengers for Christchurch got through to-night. The place where the accident happened is close by the forty-seven mile peg, and is considered very dangerous.
