RAIN-MAKING EXPERIMENTS

Oamaru, August; 16,

A preliminary experiment with explosive bombs was made by the rain-making committee this afternoon for the purpose mainly of testing the explosives. The Rev. D. C. Bates had previously mentioned that a favourable opportunity which he had anticipated, had passed on Thursday afternoon, V and he represented that the con- • ditions this evening were itns uitable, but the trial was deemed advisable. Two thirty-pound and one sixty-pound bombs where discharged, without any result or any movement of the barometer. The experiment proved the need for a high explosive force, and will be of value in several directions. Trials on a larger scale may take place early next week.
