IRISH AFFAIRS.
London, August 3. The coalmen’s dispute has been settled, on the basis of increased pay. The coaldealers insisted that employers were entitled to engage whom they liked, without trades union dictation, and the railway and steamship companies take the same stand in connection with the dockers’ and carters’ strike. The Shipping Federation has complained to Mr Birrell, Chief Secretary for Ireland, that since the resources of the Government in Belfast are unequal to the task of protecting men engaged in lawful work the federation will be compelled to provide its own force. \ Mr Birrell declined to receive a 1 deputation from the federation, I declaring that the local authorities / were able to deal with the situation.
Belfast Constables Transferred.
London, August 3
The police at Athenry a town in Galway Count}', met and ventilated their claims, despite the district inspector’s prohibition, coupled with a promise that he would consider the men’s grievances.
Four hundred of the most active of the demonstrators in Belfast have been transferred to the wildest country districts.
Freeh Drafts Want More Pay.
' London, August 2. J A large force of Wexford police, who were drafted to Belfast, threaten to lay down their arms if the Government refuse to increase their pay. ’ The Essex Regiment, from the Curragh of Kildare, has been transferred to Belfast.
