The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JULY 27, 1907. UNFIT FOR HUMAN HABITATION.
Some time ,since the Inspector of Nuisances and Buildings reported to the Council that there were a number of dwellings in the borough from which rents were being derived, that were unfit for human habitation. The Council has the power to deal with such buildings or hovels. In the interest of the public health we should be wanting in our duty if we allowed the matter, to drop, and we again urge upon the Council the necessity of taking action. We hope the Inspector will supply the Council with the locality of the said houses together with the owners’ names. The information can be treated as confidential by the Council, and the whole affair discussed in committee. We hope we, shall not be .compelled to disclose certain information now in our possession in reference to the condition of certain dwellings (?), but unless action is taken in the matter either by the local authority or the owners, we shall, in the public interest, publish facts that will open the eyes of the District Health Officer. A word to the wise should be sufficient.
