The Johannesburg correspondent of The Times states that the main object of the Transvaal Government’s Liquor Bill is to attract a larger number ot Kaffirs to the Rand, but he adds that the support of the brewers and a certain number of mining men will not suffice to carry the Bill in face of the growing storm of opposition.

The police raided an opium smoking den in Alexandra street, Palmerston, on Thursday night. Their entrance was stoutly resisted, the Chinese occupants using logs of fire-wood in the attempt to prevent an entry. Finally the representatives of the law forced their .way in and arrested two of the inmates, the others escaping. Three, opium lamps were found going. These were seized as well as a like number of pipes and other gear. The two arrested men are named Ah Wong and Ah Tin. Upon being searched at the Police Station the latter was found in possession of a tin of opium. They appeared before the Court yesterday morning and were remanded till Monday.

This reached the victim of feminine indignation recently in the shape of a letter from Mr J. H. Trace, of Portsmouth, informing Ward that he is heir to property worth and requesting him to forward his birth certificate and other evidence to establish his identity.

The character sketch in on the Second Hague Conference which is at present sitting. The Book of the Month, “ The Glen, o’ Weeping,” tells of the romance and tragedy of Glencoe. Santos Dumont gives his impressions of balooning. Indeed, the whole number is crowded with interesting matter. The number is a very interesting one.
