SPORTING.

By Prolmiile. Racing at Trenthara on Saturday last was interesting, and in some instances surprises were evidenced. Stay boy proved his adaptability to the obstacle game by decisively winning the Hack Hurdle event from a fair field. , Waipu, the runner up, ran a good race and may catch the judge’s ej'e shortly at the jumping game. Another competitor, Royal Blue, showed good form, and may account for the first 14 mile hurdle event he starts in. He took the field along at a great pace for a mile and a quarter on Saturday last, and jumped like an adept at the game.

Ben Jonson made the pace a cracker for a bit in the Winter Hurdles with the result that the two miles was covered by Lull in 3tnins saAsecs —a good go on the heavy track. Methinks there were one or two sleepers in- the rear. All Red, by Stepniak —Madder, trained by Prosser, is a useful sort, while Waikaraka should win in hack company whenever wanted. Intelligence was in the lead at the turn in the Parliamentary, though Ellerton outclassed, her in the run home. The best performance in the race was put up by Aeolus, who came from the back and gave Ellerton some trouble at the finish.

Hugh Telford is having a run of luck at present. Besides steering Romany Lad in his recent successes at Napier Park, he rode both hurdle winners on Saturday.

There were man\ T non-triers in the different events last Saturday, and some complete reversals of form may be expected before the present gathering at Trentbam concludes.

Montigo was never prominent in the Parliamentary, though Kurawaka put in a slashing run at the turn.

St. Clairaer looks " well and is worth following to-morrow and Saturday.

Foxton-owned Toatuhi scored another win in the Te Aro Scurry. Hfe came through at the turn, but had to be ridden to stall off a strong challenge by Waihuka. ’Tis said Toatuhi was off his feed for a day or two before the meeting, and that thoughts of scratching him entered the heads of his connections. However, he is a particularly good one, and another race at the meeting is not beyond him. Trainer Jim Lambers has him looking particularly well.

Paritutu did not stait in the winter Hurdles. Good reports are heard of his chances of annexing the Christchurch National. The double machine -handled over on Saturday, and the 14 supporters of the Ellerton-Lull combination each received £ll3 ns for their ill invested.
