SANITARY MATTERS.
Further Discussed by the Council. The much-vexed question of the borough sanitary arrangements was again discussed by the Council at last night’s special meeting. The population of the borough has greatly increased during the past twelve months, and the sanitary contractor appears unable to cope with the work under existing conditions. The contractor waited on the Council, and submitted that he had done his best to carry out the work satisfactorily. He had been out on ig nights during this month. He had endeavored to divide the borough into wards, in order to carry out the work but it was too much of an undertaking without employing assistance. He stated that he could not get to the pit during the recent bad weather. In fact it would require an elephant to drag the cart there. He desired to tender his resignation.
The Inspector of Nuisances was also present, and read a list of names of people complaining that the nightsoil had not been removed from their premises. He also warned the Council that diptheria was prevalent in Palmerston, and care should be taken that the borough’s sanitary arrangements received careful attention. He was of the opinion that the contractor had done his best.
A resident was also present, and complained that his residence had not been visited.
After a general discussion, it was resolved to advertise for applicants for the position, at a salary of £$ per week. Applications to be in by next ordinary meeting.
