BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Special Meeting.
A special meeting of the above Council was held last last night, to consider the Works Committee report and general. Present: — His Worship the Mayor (B. G. Gower Esq) and Crs Baker, Stiles, Hennessy, Gray and Wilson. The Works Committee’s report was read as follows; —
The Committee visited Jeiiks Street culvert and found that the culvert is as low as it is possible to get it. The culvert in Norbiton Street near Mr C. Easton’s, is too small by half to carry the quantity of flood water coming into the drains. There is a slip on the South side of this culvert. Re the culvert in Norbiton and Spring Streets, the defect exists at this as at the other end. The rush of water caused by the heavy storm on the 9th inst flowed down Norbiton Street and made its way at the back of Messrs Jackson and Swift’s, and on to Norbiton Street again, flooding very badly all the lands adjoining. Water on the Avenue between Baker Street and Cemetery Cutting is considerable. Cr Hennessy with the consent of Cr Wilson got a large proportion of the water let off through his (Cr Wilson’s) paddock at the corner of Avenue and Baker Streets. Considerable quantities of water lay on the Avenue from cutting to No. 6 Fine. No 6 Line of formation, water lay 3 feet or more. The foreman informed us that the water flowed across the formation at the junction of No 6 end the Moutoa Road. Colej r Street.—The fault here lies through a small culvert and during the storm the street was under water. From what we could see we anticipate trouble if something is not done to give the flood waters more clearance. The Council discussed the report at considerable length and it was finally adopted and the following resolution was carried unamiously : —That one chain of 9 inch pipes be purchased for Union street culvert, 12x8, at junction of No. 6 Line and Norbiton street; the roadman to attend to water in cemetery-road ; permission be given to settlers in Coley street to carry out the drains required. The applications from Messrs Rough, Goddin and Hornblow to level hillside fronting their sections in Thynne street was granted, subject to the work being done to the satisfaction of the Council. Cr Hennessy impressed upon the Council the necessity for taking precaution against sand drift.
