COURSING.

[Uy Least).] The newly-formed Palmerston North Coursing Club have every reason to be satisfied with the success of the inaugural meetings held on Tuesdays and Wednesday". Entries were large, and attendances good, while the course at Terrace End can be made an ideal one with but little expense. The Maiden Stakes eventually" fell to St. Olliver, who ran in the nomination of Fitzgerald Bros., of Wellington, and who beat William’s Eady r Cardigan in the final, after an interesting course. When the card opened on the event, the winner was backed to win a couple of hundred at 20’s, 15’s, and 10’s, and it is reported most of the cash went to the dog’s connections. Foxton was represented by McGill’s Awahon, Gavey’s Lady Diana and Birkenhead, and Shadbolt’s Proctor, but the former was the only one to win a beat, though Lady Diana and Proctor showed up well. The Members’ Stake went to H. Overton, his two dogs, Searchlight and Moss Rose, dividing the stake.

An amusing incident happened in connection with the coursing match on Tuesday. A maiden course was in progress, and Shadbolt’s Proctor, with cover on, bolted from his owner, and took part in the course, beating the others pointless, against heavy disadvantages. Needless to say, punters eagerly sought the name of the hero, with the result that when Proctor went to the slips in his heat he was backed at lour to one on, while his opponent brought forth odds of three to one against. The good thing, Proctor, went down.
